The recent poll sheds light on public opinion regarding the fitness of Joe Biden and Donald Trump to serve another term as President of the United States. The survey, conducted from July 13-17 and including 1,638 U.S. adults, asked a pointed question about whether these two prominent politicians, who are considered their parties’ 2024 frontrunners, are worthy of the presidential position.

According to the results, a majority of Americans believe that neither Biden nor Trump is fit for the presidency. Specifically, 55% of respondents believe Biden is not fit to serve another term, while an almost identical 53% express the same sentiment about Trump.

The poll further highlights the impact of partisanship and polarization on these perceptions. A remarkable 94% of Trump’s 2020 voters assert that Biden is not fit for the presidency, while 91% of Biden’s 2020 voters express the same opinion about Trump.

Although more Americans (36%) believe Trump is fit to serve again compared to Biden (27%), the gap can be largely attributed to partisan differences. Trump voters are more likely (76%) to affirm his fitness, while Biden voters (62%) are slightly less likely to affirm Biden’s.

Regarding specific concerns about the candidates’ fitness, detractors of Biden and Trump highlight various issues. Among those who deem Biden unfit, 20% cite incompetence, 12% mention his age, 10% point to corruption, 9% criticize his performance, and 3% view him as dangerous.

On the other hand, Trump’s detractors express concerns of a different nature, with 21% considering him dangerous, 17% calling him corrupt, 6% citing incompetence, 5% disapproving of his first-term performance, and only 2% mentioning his age.

Interestingly, Biden enjoys more overall support than Trump among registered voters, leading his predecessor by 4 points (47% to 43%), mirroring the results of a previous Yahoo News/YouGov survey.

However, concerning the Republican field, Trump maintains a dominant lead among potential GOP primary voters, with 48% support compared to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ 23%. Despite his lead, the percentage of GOP voters opting for “someone else” has increased to 43%, signaling potential challenges for Trump’s candidacy.
