A
16-year-old student was shot dead while waiting for a school bus at Greenwood
in Indiana, United States Thursday morning. The student was enrolled at
Whiteland Community High School. Cops responded to gunshots at the US 31 and
East Worthsville Road in Greenwood shortly before 7 am. Greenwood Assistant
Police Chief Matt Fillenwarth confirmed the identity of the victim, who had
recently transferred to the school district.

According
to police, the shooting was targeted and the victim was shot multiple times.
The assistant police chief said the victim was waiting for a school bus along
with several others when the suspect approached him. Others ran before the
victim was shot and the suspect left the scene on foot.

Multiple
law enforcement agencies are on the hunt for the suspect, Johnson County Sheriff
Duane Burgess told 13News. An Indian State Police helicopter and ATF-K9 have
been deployed.

A Greenwood
Community Schools spokesperson said schools were initially placed on lockdown
after reports of the shooting emerged.

At 07:45
am, Greenwood High School posted on social media that it had gone from lockdown
to lockout mode. Exterior doors have been locked and students are remaining in
place unless given administrative approval or escort.

Clark
Pleasant Community School Superintendent Dr Patrick Spray said, “It is a sad
day for The Clark-Pleasant school community. It is with a heavy heart that we
report that one of our high school students has died after being shot near his
bus stop earlier this morning, near US 31 and Worthsville Road. Our thoughts
and prayers go out to his family and friends and also to his classmates and
teachers at Whiteland Community High School.”

“Greenwood
Police are handling the investigation, interviewing witnesses and searching for
the suspect near the scene. Clark-Pleasant Police Department is securing all
our school buildings today and extra officers have been brought in to assist,”
said Spray in a statement.
