At least six people were shot dead and 12 others injured in a mass shooting in downtown Sacramento early Sunday. As police were searching for the suspect, several witnesses came forward to recall the”terror.”

Speaking to Los Angeles Times, Alexandra Arellano was working at El Santo Ultra Lounge when people started walking out of the club as it was closing time. She was about to walk outside when she heard “around like 30 or 50 rounds being shot.”

“After that, everybody started panicking,” she told the outlet, adding that people then began running back into the club.

Her fiancé, Jesse Fuentes, who works as a security guard for the same club, told the outlet that around 2 am, he and another security guard heard a commotion at a nearby garage and rushed to the scene to see a “gunfight going on.”

“We were just trying to take cover because we couldn’t tell where the shots were coming from at first, because they were coming from two different areas. But the one that really just freaked everybody out was the automatic weapons. That’s when everyone was running and pushing,” he said. 

He immediately asked everybody to “Get inside and take cover!” 

“It was just a lot of panicking and screaming,” Fuentes said.

After the firing stopped, he went outside and saw a few bodies on the ground.

Meanwhile, a video posted to Twitter showed people running through the street amid the sounds of rapid gunfire in the city.

“This morning our city has a broken heart,” Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said. We don’t know all the facts but we know there were mass casualties in a very short amount of time.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom called for the end of the “scourge of gun violence.”

“Sadly, we once again mourn the lives lost and for those injured in yet another horrendous act of gun violence. Jennifer and I send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and to the wider community impacted by this terrible tragedy,” he said in a statement. 

“What we do know at this point is that another mass casualty shooting has occurred, leaving families with lost loved ones, multiple individuals injured and a community in grief. The scourge of gun violence continues to be a crisis in our country, and we must resolve to bring an end to this carnage,” his statement continued.
