US President Joe Biden has urged the military forces of Myanmar to retract their actions and immediately relinquish the seized power.

Moreover, an order to review the sanctions, which were lifted after the country transitioned into a democracy, has been placed under consideration.

“The international community should come together in one voice to press the Burmese military to immediately relinquish the power they have seized,” Biden said in a statement.

The US President said in a statement, “The international community should come together in one voice to press the Burmese military to immediately relinquish the power they have seized. The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy.”

“The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy,” he said, using Myanmar’s former name. The reversal of that progress will necessitate an immediate review of our sanction laws and authorities, followed by appropriate action. The United States will stand up for democracy wherever it is under attack”, he added.

Due to its close proximity with the US-rival, China, the transition of Myanmar into a democratic nation was viewed as a substantial milestone for the former US administration led by President Barack Obama and then Vice President, Joe Biden.

However, Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of Myanmar, faced condemnation from western powers after she failed to denounce the mass killings of Rohingya Muslims.

The armed forces of the country detained the major senior cabinet of the government, including Aung San Suu Kyi early Monday  morning.

“The United States is taking note of those who stand with the people of Burma in this difficult hour,” Biden said, in a cryptic reference to China.

“We will work with our partners throughout the region and the world to support the restoration of democracy and the rule of law, as well as to hold accountable those responsible for overturning Burma’s democratic transition.”
