President Joe Biden on Friday announced his plans to nominate two new members to the US Postal Service Broad of Governors. The move might be seen as the potential first step in removing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Donald Trump appointee.

During the 2020 US presidential elections, DeJoy became a political lightning rod making key changes to the postal service to slow down delivery times as voters were trying to mail in their ballots.

Now Biden is replacing two of DeJoy’s backers on the board, chair Ron Bloom and John Barger. However, the president will likely need to make additional appointments soon as terms expire in order for the board to replace DeJoy.

Daniel Tangherlini and Derek Kan have been nominated by the president to the board.

Furthermore, the board can include up to nine governors chosen by the President and ratified by the Senate. Only five governors can be from the same political party in order for the board to have shared partisan representation.

Tangherlini is the managing director of the Emerson Collective, a nonprofit organisation. During Obama’s administration, he was the administrator of the General Services Administration as well as the Treasury Department’s senior financial officer.

“If confirmed, I look forward to serving and working to make sure the Postal Service is run as efficiently and effectively as possible,” Tangherlini said in a statement, according to Associated Press inputs.

Kan works at Deliverr, an online fulfilment company. He was the deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget and the Transportation Department’s under secretary for policy during Trump’s administration. He also served as a policy adviser to Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate.

Kan said he “will work to strengthen the Postal Service so that it will continue to serve the American people well into the future,” AP reported.
