Vice-president Mike Pence has told Donald Trump that he does not have the powers to overturn the results of the November presidential elections. Democratic challenger Joe Biden defeated US President Trump 306-232 in the Electoral College. Trump trailed the President-elect by over 7 million votes.

But the Republican has refused to concede defeat and had hinted that he was now banking on Pence to overturn the results of the elections.

Pence is set to preside over the US Senate on Wednesday as it receives the results of the state-by-state Electoral College that determines the winner of presidential elections.

On Tuesday, the vice-president conveyed to Trump during a lunch that he lacks the powers to overturn the electoral college results, reported the New York Times.

“Vice President Mike Pence told President Trump on Tuesday that he did not believe he had the power to block congressional certification of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory in the presidential election despite Mr Trump’s baseless insistence that he did,” the daily reported, citing unnamed people briefed on the conversation.

Donald Trump has denied that Pence conveyed this message to him and has decried the media report as ‘fake news’.

“The New York Times report regarding comments Vice President Pence supposedly made to me today is fake news. He never said that. The Vice President and I are in total agreement that the Vice President has the power to act,” Trump said in a statement issued by his campaign.
