The office of Sergeants Benevolent Association, a New York City police union, was raided by the officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday. The home of Ed Mullins, the leader of the union, was also searched.
A spokesperson for the federal law enforcement agency said that its agents were “carrying out a law enforcement action in connection with an ongoing investigation” while not revealing any details about the probe.
New York police sergeant Mullins has been in the spotlight after publically releasing the department’s paperwork on social media last year. The released papers were related to the arrest of the daughter of New York City’s mayor Bill de Blasio, who was linked to the protests related to the killing of George Floyd.
The law enforcement official has also accused, and subsequently filed a lawsuit, claiming that his voice was suppressed by the department recommending disciplinary action and grilling him, according to reports from Associated Press.
Mullins’ legal representation has previously argued that the did not violate any guidelines laid out by the New York Police Department in relation to releasing the documents. The lawyers said that the personal information of Chiara de Blasio, like her date of birth and address, was already present online.
However, the department trial relating to the alleged breach of paperwork has been postponed indefinitely after one of the attorneys suffered a medical emergency.
While speaking about Mullins, the Big Apple’s mayor said, “I think he’s been a divisive voice. But that does not cause me to feel anything in this situation because I do not know what is happening”, according to reports from Associated Press.
He added, “All I hear is an FBI raid. I do not know the specifics, I do not know who it is directed at. I want to really hear the details before I comment further.”
The Sergeants Benevolent Association represents about 13,000 active and retired New York police sergeants, a rank above police officer and detective but below captain and lieutenant.
