The suburbs of Minneapolis found themselves at the centre stage yet again as fresh protests started after US police fatally shot a young Black man. In the May of 2020, Minneapolis saw the murder of George Floyd by a former police officer who is currently on trial.

Hundreds of people gathered outside a police station at Brooklyn Center, protesting against the shooting. According to the AFP videojournalist, police was trying to disperse the crowd of demonstrators with teargas and flashbangs. 

The 20-year-old victim called his mother to inform her that he has been pulled over by the police. The mother says she heard the police officer asking him to put the phone down.  After which she received the news from her son’s girlfriend, AFP reported. 

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has refused to identify the victim however they confirmed that they are “investigating an officer-involved shooting incident”. 

The statement from the Brooklyn Center Police Department says that the victim was pulled over for a traffic violation. Upon the discovery of the outstanding warrants, police officers attempted to take the man into custody. 

The victim was shot as he got back into his car. The female in the passenger seat was transported to a local hospital who also refused to identify the woman but has confirmed that she suffered “non-life-threatening injuries”

The news comes in as the former police officer Derek Chauvin is facing charges of manslaughter and murder over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last May.
