A joint session of the US Congress was underway to count the result of the US presidential election and officially confirm the 306-to-232 Electoral College votes won by President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. The joint session was to be presided over by Vice President Mike Pence before Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.

Earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, observing that the Joint Session should be a solemn occasion, said there are no speaking roles during the session, except for announcing the votes of the states.
