United States House of Representatives has effectively delayed the vote on the infrastructure bill, which has already been given legislative approval by the Senate. The postponed vote comes as progressive lawmakers in the chambers resist while keeping their demands on the scale.
Instead, the House of Representatives will be voting on a bill linked to the short-term extension of highway funding, according to reports from CNN.
A notice was sent from the chambers of Representative Steny Hoyer — a member of the Democratic party, lawmaker from Maryland and the majority leader in the House of Representatives — stating that the bill on transportation extension will be the last one before the session is suspended for this week, according to reports from CNN.
Representatives Pramila Jayapal, who is the head of the House Progressive Caucus, said that there was an overwhelming response to the members of the grouping on the new spending framework. However, the lawmakers continue to demand that the ‘Build Back Better’ comes along with the infrastructure deal.
The lawmaker from Washington said in a statement, “We have consistently said that we need to have both of these (bills), because it wasn’t until we really did what we did, that all of these priorities of the President, the President’s agenda, are on the table because of progressives standing up and saying we’re not going to leave anyone behind”, according to reports from CNN.
In a conversation with CNN reports, Hoyer said on Thursday that he does not think the bill will be delayed till December 3, when the United States’ stopgap bill for keeping the government funded expires.
The timeline of the vote on the infrastructure bill remains unclear as United States President Joe Biden, on Thursday afternoon, left Washington DC for a diplomatic tour to Europe along with First Lady Jill Biden.
