The US Senate voted in favour of the resolution that validated the impeachment trial of former President Trump as constitutional despite calls from some Republicans to dismiss proceedings.

The Senate voted 56-44 to pass the resolution.A simple majority was needed to proceed.

The Republican senators who voted in favour were Bill Cassidy,Susan Collins,Lisa Murkowski,Mitt Romney,Ben Sasse and Pat Toomey.

The House managers and Trump’s defense team have each been allotted up to 16 hours spread over two days to present their cases.

The House managers arguing for impeachment will set the ball rolling, and are expected to use a lot of video from the day of the insurrection to make their points.

The proceedings are expected to resume at 12 pm ET on Wednesday.
