A Princeton University student who went missing in October died by suicide, the prosecutor’s office said Wednesday. The autopsy report on Misrach Ewunetie, conducted by the Middlesex Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, showed the 20-year-old died from “Bupropion, Escitalopram and Hydroxyzine Toxicity,” according to a press release from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bupropion and escitalopram, the generic labels for Wellbutrin and Lexapro, respectively, are generally prescribed to treat depression. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine used for allergic reactions and anxiety.

Originally from Ethiopia, Ewunetie was a junior sociology major at the Ivy League School. The high-achieving student was last seen brushing her teeth in her dorm on October 14. Her family in Ohio reported her missing two days later when she missed an appointment for her US citizenship application. “She is the gem of the house, their only daughter and the youngest,” her brother Universe Ewunetie said of his sister, reported the US Sun.

She received a full four-year scholarship to Princeton University after graduating from Villa Angela – St Joseph High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Ewunetie was expected to graduate in 2024. She ranked first in her class of 107 students, according to the high school. Ewunetie has spent two summers as a business analyst for McKinsey & Company in Ohio and interned at Bank of America, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Ewunetie’s body was found on October 20 on the grounds of the school behind the tennis courts.  

In a letter to the campus community, Princeton Vice President for Campus Life Rochelle Calhoun said authorities determined there were “no obvious signs of injury and her death does not appear suspicious or criminal in nature.”

“Misrach’s death is an unthinkable tragedy. Our hearts go out to her family, her friends, and the many others who knew and loved her,” Calhoun added.
