Researchers on Saturday revealed that around 1,000 businesses were affected by the cyberattack in the United States, days before the country’s independence day on July 4. 

Cyberattacks, from Solarwind Sunburst to Ransomware, have not been an unusual occurrence since the early 2000s. Companies like eBay, Yahoo, Adobe and Verizon have faced cyberattacks that did not only cost them money but also dented their reputation.

What is cyber attack?

Data-driven, American marketing company Tech Target describes a cyber attack as an attempt to gain unauthorized access to a computer, computing system, or computer network with the intent to cause damage. It can also be called an assault by cybercriminals on single or multiple computers or networks. 

Cyberattacks can be a part of cyberwarfare or cyberterrorism. It can be employed by individuals, groups, states or even organisations. The tool/product used for the cyberattack is called a cyberweapon.

 Cybercriminals use a variety of methods to launch cyberattacks. They use malware, phishing, ransomware, denial of service, among other methods.

The Associated Press Stylebook defines a cyberattack as something that causes %u201Cphysical damage or significant and wide-ranging disruption.%u201D

Varonis, a cyber-security company, said that the COVID-19 pandemic and the work from home culture made people more vulnerable to cybercrimes. It added that the rollout of 5G has made connected devices, well, more connected than ever, which means the scope of cybercrime has increased. According to Varonis, Remote workers will continue to be a target for cybercriminals in 2021. It says that cloud breaches will increase.
