Democrat California senator Kamala Harris, in a face off on Thursday with Republian Mike Pence in the first and only general election vice presidential debate of 2020, attacked US President Donald Trump over the alleged lack of transparency of his administration. Sitting 12 feet apart and behind plexiglass partitions, the two candidates debated issues such as coronavirus, healthcare, economy among others
Moderated by Susan Page of USA Today, the debate between Harris, 55, and Pence, 61, was a calm as compared to the presidential debate that plunged into chaos from the word go with Trump and Biden taking acerbic potshots at each other
Harris, when asked by Page whether voters deserved a clearer picture of the presidential candidates’ health, turned the question into one on transparency. Calling on The New York Times’ reporting on Trump’s tax record, she zeroed in on the $400 million in debt he is believed to owe to unknown business partners or creditors.
“If you want to discuss transparency, let’s talk about Trump’s taxes. “Just so everyone is clear, when we say in debt, it means you owe money to somebody. It would be really good to know who the president of the United States, the commander-in-chief, owes money to,” Harris said. “Because the American people have a right to know what is influencing the President’s decisions. And is he making those decisions on the best interests of the American people, of you, or self-interest?”
“Joe has been incredibly transparent, over many, many years. The one thing we all know about Joe, he puts it all out there. He is honest, he’s forthright,” she said. “But Donald Trump has been about covering up everything.”
