Police in Southern California shot and killed an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy after they claim he pointed a gun at them on a golf course.

Who is Alejandro Diaz?

The off-duty officer, later identified as 45-year-old Alejandro Diaz, brandished a gun at them on Tuesday afternoon at the Sierra Lakes Golf Club course in Fontana, roughly an hour east of Los Angeles, according to a news release from Fontana Police.

Officers had arrived on the location in response to a report of gunfire coming from a nearby house. Police think Diaz used two handguns to fire the shots in the house before fleeing the scene and turning up at the golf course.

Officers said they tried talking to Diaz but that he pointed a gun at them. Multiple officers then fired at Diaz, who was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
