Former US senator from New York, James Buckley, died at the age of 100 on Friday, as per media reports. The news of his death was confirmed by his son.

He made history in 1970 with his election to the U.S. Senate from New York as the candidate of the Conservative Party.

Who was James Buckley?

James Lane Buckley was a prominent American figure known for his roles in politics and the judiciary. Notably, he served in the Republican caucus of the United States Senate from 1971 to 1977 as a member of the Conservative Party of New York State. He also held a number of jobs throughout the Reagan government. He gained notoriety in 1980 as the Republican candidate for the Connecticut Senate seat. He was defeated by Chris Dodd, the Democratic contender, despite his candidacy.

Career-

James Lane Buckley joined the US Navy in 1942, demonstrating his commitment to his nation. He actively took part in crucial engagements during World War II, including those at Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, and Okinawa. In 1946, Buckley was discharged from the military with an honorable discharge and the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade).

He continued his schooling after serving in the military and graduated from Yale Law School in 1949 with a Bachelor of Laws. He then became admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1950 and practiced law there until 1953. He then changed to working for The Catawba Corporation, where he held vice president and director responsibilities.

Buckley was married to Ann Frances Cooley in 1953. He had six children.
