Kentucky State Representative Lamin Swann passed away on Sunday days after suffering from a “significant medical emergency” and being hospitalized. The news of his passing was confirmed by Swann’s mother Pamela Dixon, who did not reveal what the emergency was.

“Beyond our faith, what comforts us is knowing the positive and lasting impact he had on so many. Those include his loved ones and friends; those he advocated for throughout his life; and, now, those whose own lives will forever be strengthened by his decision to be an organ donor,” Dixon said

Who was Kentucky State Rep. Lamin Swann?

The 45-year-old Democrat was elected to House District 93, located in southern Fayette County, in 2022 and was a member of committees for transportation, health services, economic development and workforce investment, and elections, constitutional amendments and intergovernmental affairs.

Swann grew up in Lexington and was 8 years old when he joined his grandfather at the Kentucky State Capitol to demand the designation of the state holiday honouring civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr., according to a biography on his campaign website.

Swann attended the University of Kentucky and majored in social work. He was involved with the university’s Violence Intervention & Prevention Centre and served as a staff writer and section editor for the school’s student newspaper.

According to his biography, Swann eventually turned into an activist and organiser during demonstrations for racial justice. He maintained a firm in north Lexington that specialised in fashion and product design and worked with clients in the Fayette County Family Court’s family reunification process.

Republican House Speaker David Osborne also issued a statement calling Swann a “dedicated public servant.” “While his time in the House has been cut short, Lamin had already established himself as a passionate advocate for his district as well as a voice for those who live with disabilities. He had many friends among our colleagues and served as a positive force in countless discussions. His loss will be felt by all who served with him,” he added.
