Sadie Mauro, a lacrosse player for her high school, has been identified as the 17-year-old woman who died after being thrown into the water after a boat off Cape Cod crashed with a jetty.

Around 9 p.m. on Friday, the boat with six persons on board crashed onto a jetty at Sesuit Harbor in Dennis, according to Massachusetts State Police.

After a multi-agency search, the teen’s body was found off Cold Storage Beach at roughly 11:30 p.m., according to police. A second male teenager was reported injured and sent to the hospital with a head wound.

The teenage girl was described by Mauro’s principal at Dover Sherborn High School as “genuine and effortlessly kind.” It is now unknown what is thought to have caused the crash or whether any charges will be brought in connection with it.

Mauro competed at the State Championship in lacrosse last month and was a standout midfielder.

‘I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately,’ the high school student wrote on her recruitment page about her goals to play lacrosse in college.

Following the incident on Friday night, reports of a missing person prompted the Coast Guard, the state Environmental Police, the Barnstable County Dive Team, and the Sandwich Fire Marine to conduct a combined search.

Along with Massachusetts Environmental Police marine assets, a State Police marine unit, and an underwater recovery unit performed dive operations at the collision site on Saturday in an effort to collect boat debris.

According to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office, a preliminary investigation revealed that the boat was fitted with two outboard 250-horsepower engines with an Alabama registration.

According to Principal John Smith’s letter to parents, a gathering for middle and high school students will take place on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon in the school library.
