Putting into bat first by Australia,
England found themselves in great danger with their openers being dismissed by
captain Pat Cummins. After Haseeb Hameed and Zak Crawley departed, Dawid Malan
too was dismissed by Cummins. Hameed was bowled over for a duck. It was the
50th duck by England batters in Test cricket in 2021.

Joe Root’s fifty was not enough as
England’s innings wrapped up inside 65.1 overs. 185 meanwhile was their
second-lowest total of this Australia tour. Earlier in the Brisbane Test, their
first innings was wrapped up for 147. This was, meanwhile, the third time
England were dismissed in an innings even before reaching 200 runs mark. In 28
innings they have played in Test cricket in 2021, England have been bowled out
for under 200, 12 times.

Though England had a bad day at office,
Test captain Joe Root broke a record. He has scored a whopping 1,680 runs this
year. Root’s tally is the third-highest by a player in a calendar year behind
only Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf (1,788 runs in 2006) and former West Indies
skipper Sir Vivian Richards (1,710 runs in 1976).

On Sunday, Root was dismissed by Mitchell
Starc.
