In a bid to help voters in the United States make an informed choice, social media giant Facebook has launched a voting information center. The center, launched on Thursday, will also help voters register for November’s US presidential elections and counter misinformation.

This is the part of the platforms’ efforts to prevent a repeat of the online disinformation that marred the 2016 US election.

The hub accessed from the menu on Facebook and Instagram “will serve as a one-stop-shop to give people in the US the tools and information they need to make their voices heard at the ballot box,” the social media giant said.

The tool will allow users information on the changes in voting procedures that have been brought into place due to the coronavirus pandemic. A user will also be able to check if he is registered to vote, and if not the procedure to do so.

The social media giant said ‘the new product connects everyone on Facebook and Instagram to accurate and easy-to-find information about voting wherever they live’ and helps them to hold their elected officials accountable.

The San Francisco based company said it would add labels to voting-related posts on Facebook and Instagram from Thursday. The feature had been rolled out for politicians last month. It is also launching a “Voting Alerts” feature to help state and local election authorities communicate with voters about election-related updates.

Facebook’s latest moves come amid concerns over campaigns by governments aimed at influencing elections and public sentiment in other countries through media outlets that disguise their true origins.

State-led influence campaigns were prominent on social media during the 2016 US election and have been seen around the world.

Facebook said the Voting Information Center was another layer in its line of defense against election interference.
