Brushing one’s hair is one of the most common everyday activity. Often done just before leaving during an early morning rush, brushing one’s hair correctly is as important for good, shiny hair as is proper conditioning.

According to a recent article in Vogue India, along with improving “the blood circulation to the scalp”, brushing one’s hair properly, “can help shed dead hair.” It can also reportedly condition one’s hair, by stimulating the secretion of sebum, a natural oil that smoothens strands and makes them ‘manageable’.

To brush your hair properly, one should always start in the midsection and move down to the ends.

To detangle, start by brushing the ends and then work towards the roots. This way, you won’t pull on the hair and damage the hair cuticle. If your hair is really knotted, always use the tips of the bristles or the comb to detangle.

For wavy hair, one should “always use a serum for smoothening the strands”, and use a wide-toothed comb to set one’s hair while damp to prevent frizz later.

Regularly brushing curly hair when dry can lead to breakage and damage.

Repeated brushing should be avoided as much as possible on fine, thinning hair as this would further aggravate the hairfall. Synthetic bristles can be picked over natural bristles for a gentler approach.
