Winning a Grand Slam title after a year must have brought relief to World No 7 Novak Djokovic who was having a ‘tough year’. The Serb is unlikely to take part in the US Open due to his COVID-19 vaccination status. Hence, equalling Rafael Nadal’s 22 Grand Slam world record is out of question.

However, Djoko seemed happy ‘to return to his best’. The 35-year-old defeated Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon 2022 final last week. After losing the first set, he came back strong and finished 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3). It was his seventh title at the All England tournament, fourth consecutive, and one he will cherish for a long time.

Coming to the tournament after being deported from Australia, losing in Dubai, Monaco, his home-turf Serbia, Madrid, Italy and France, Djokovic managed to go all the way at Wimbledon. His arch-rival Nadal had to bow out at the semi-final stage due to an abdominal tear.

The Australian governement, recently, lifted the ban on unvaccinated foreigners, which means Djoko could play in Melbourne next year.

“I think we are doing our best. Of course, it’s not my decision whether he will be able to play at the Australian Open, but Novak is always welcome, he knows that many people in Australia like to watch him play,” Australian Open’s director said.

Talking about retirement, Djoko, as per Tennishead, said that he does not want to hurry his career.

“I don’t feel I’m in a hurry to finish my career in a year or two. Thinking about it. I want to keep my body healthy because that is necessary to continue at this level,” Djokovic said, per Tennishead.

The Serbian star admitted that this year has been different. He was defeated at the Olympics, US Open and ATP finals last year before the Australian Open controversey happened.

“This year has not been the same as the previous years. It started as it did and it affected me a lot. The first months of the year were very hard for me. I did not feel good. My mental and emotional part was not in a good place. I wanted to play, but at the same time, when I jumped on the court in Dubai, I felt a lot of pressure and I didn’t feel good on the court. At that moment I realized that this was going to be tough, but sooner or later my best would come back tennis,” Djokovic said.
