Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf is reportedly battling for his life but is not dead, according to a statement from his family.

Quashing rumours circulated by Pakistani media earlier in the day, Musharraf’s family confirmed that the 78-year-old Pakistani politician was in a bad state, but clarified that he was neither on the ventilator, nor dead.

“He is not on the ventilator. Has been hospitalized for the last 3 weeks due to a complication of his ailment (Amyloidosis),” wrote Musharraf’s family on Twitter, from the former President’s official handle.

“Going through a difficult stage where recovery is not possible and organs are malfunctioning. Pray for ease in his daily living,” the statement added.

Earlier in the day, Ifzaal Siddique, President of Musharraf’s party All Pakistan Muslim League, Overseas, had also urged people to not believe rumours about the 78-year-old’s demise, tweeting, “Dear All, General Pervez Musharraf is at home bit ill though but fully alert as usual, please don’t listen to fake news. Just pray for his good health, Ameen.”

Rumours about Musharraf’s demise were circulated on social media on Friday after Pakistani media outlet Waqt News claimed on their Twitter handle that the former President had died. The tweet, however, has since been deleted.

Musharraf, who served as the President of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008, became the country’s first former military leader to be tried and convicted for treason when he was sentenced to death for high treason for suspending the Constitution in 2007.

However, Musharraf has been living in Dubai since 2016, where he has reportedly suffered from frequent ailments prior to his most recent hospitalization.
