As wildfires spread in the western United States and Canada, New York and other parts of eastern US were shrouded in a gray smoky haze on Tuesday, reports AFP.

An air quality advisory was issued by New York state’s environmental protection services on Tuesday. The advisory gets automatically triggered when the fine particle matter is on track to rise beyond 35 micrograms per cubic meter of air.

An expert from the agency said it is not uncommon for smoke from fires in the west of the country to reach the New York area, but they usually remain high enough to not affect air quality. This time, the smoke was lower than usual, the expert said.

In recent days, several large fires have wreaked havoc in the weatern parts of United States. The worst hit regions have been California, Oregon and Nevada. Wildfires usually break out in these parts of US, but the fire season has just begun. The Bootleg Fire has been ravaging Oregon.

In Canada, more than 2,000 people have been evacuated in recent days in the province of Ontario, the most populous in the country, and more than 200 fires were active in the province and neighboring Manitoba, according to official figures Tuesday.

The phenomenon was set to dissipate on Wednesday with the arrival of a cold front in the New York region, said a spokesperson for the US National Weather Service.
