The English Premier League on Tuesday announced that it is suspending its deal with its Russian state-owned broadcast partner Rambler (Okko Sport) amid the country’s invasion on Ukraine. 

Premier League clubs in a meeting decided to terminate the deal with the Sberbank-owned channel, which was due to run until the end of the season.

“The Premier League and its clubs today unanimously agreed to suspend our agreement with Russian broadcast partner Rambler (Okko Sport) with immediate effect and to donate £1 million to support the people of Ukraine,” The English football competition said. 

However, no decision has been taken yet on whether to annul the new rights contract from next season with Match, which is owned by state energy giant Gazprom.

The league used matches last weekend to show solidarity toward Ukraine, where Russia has been at war for two weeks. The blue and yellow of Ukraine’s flag was displayed across stadiums in England’s top division.

“The league strongly condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We call for peace and our thoughts are with all those impacted. The £1m donation will be made to the Disasters Emergency Committee to deliver humanitarian aid directly to those in need,” Premier League added.

The decision was announced as anti-war banners were displayed before top-flight games. Captains of the teams were seen wearing yellow and blue armbands to show support for Ukraine. 

The Football Association, as per PA Media, also suspended its deals with Russian broadcasters, meaning the FA Cup quarter-finals will not be shown in the country. 

FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia national teams and clubs from all competitions. National men’s team barred from World Cup qualifying playoffs this month. UEFA barred Belarus from staging international games.

UEFA canceled sponsorship from Russian energy company Gazprom which covered Champions League, UEFA national team competitions and the 2024 European Championship.
