HBO renewed Serial, an investigative journalism podcast by Sarah Koenig. The 1999 murder investigation case of Lee was featured in one of the episodes and gained much attention. So, the company agreed to a documentary that recapped the case along with new details about Syed’s appeal process. It reviewed the case up until the 2018 status of the case.
According to the HBO documentary, Syed turned down a plea bargain in 2018 that required him to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence.
