World Water Day is observed every year on March 22 across the globe. Water plays a very important role in the lives of humans, right from drinking to cleaning and other purposes, it plays an important role in our daily lives.

Though a lot of us know that water is an integral part of our lives, we don’t do much to consume it sustainably or save the resource from wasting. World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22 to spread awareness that water is precious and it is pivotal for our existence.

Across the world, there are around 2.2 billion people who don’t have access to safe water. By 2025, half of the global population will be living in areas where water will be scarce and this makes it even more important to conserve water and use it rationally.

History behind the day:

The United Nations General Assembly on December 22, 1992 adopted a resolution, which declared March 22 as World Water Day. The first World Water Day was celebrated on March 22, 1993 after the resolution got passed.

Theme for 2021: 

The theme for World Water Day 2021 is “Valuing Water.” United Nations in its website gives a brief about the theme, “The value of water is about much more than its price – water has enormous and complex value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural environment. If we overlook any of these values, we risk mismanaging this finite, irreplaceable resource.”

“Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 is to ensure water and sanitation for all. Without a comprehensive understanding of water’s true, multidimensional value, we will be unable to safeguard this critical resource for the benefit of everyone.”

Significance: 

The significance of this day is very simple, as our resources are on the verge of depletion, so it becomes more important than ever to spread awareness about the importance of freshwater and its conservation.
