Shots were fired during a bank robbery at Chicago Loop on Thursday afternoon, ABC2 and CWB Chicago reported. There was a large police presence outside the Fifth Third Bank, 1 South Wacker.
A security guard was shot and wounded while the reports add that no one was seriously injured. However, the suspect remains at large.
The robbery took place at the Fifth/Third Bank branch at 1 South Wacker Dr. at Madison Street, according to the FBI. Police said at 2:59 pm, the suspect walked out of the bank building and the 59-year-old security guard confronted him.
The suspect fired multiple shots and the security guard was injured in the right hand. The guard also took out his gun and fired at the suspect, but he missed the shot.
The security guard refused medical attention. Police earlier reported the guard was shot in the left shoulder and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition but later said the information was not correct, reported CBSNews.
The suspect reportedly ran off east on Madison Street. Some reports also said that the suspect ran into Ogilvie Transportation Center, which is west of the crime scene. Metra said Ogilvie was briefly closed but as the suspect was not there, the train depot was reopened.
Multiple bullet holes were seen in the glass revolving doors at the entrance of the bank and broken glass littered the ground nearby. At least a dozen shell casings found on the ground were marked. People employed in the building said they heard between 20 and 25 shots.
Madison Street was closed between Franklin Street and Wacker Drive.
The FBI released a surveillance photo of the bank robber late Thursday. The suspect seemed a black male, wearing a black hooded jacket, a mask, winter gloves, and blue jeans and the photo showed him holding a gun.
