Following an increase in support for Right-wing and conservative opposition parties, Spain’s socialist government is on the verge of disintegrating. Spain‘s next prime minister could be Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the right-wing opposition Popular Party.

While there is not enough support for conservative alternatives to guarantee a majority, they can now create a coalition with far-right groups to form a government.

Who is Alberto Nunez Feijoo?

Alberto Núñez Feijóo is a Spanish politician who has been prominent in Galician politics. He was born on September 10, 1961, in Ourense, Galicia, Spain. Feijóo is a member of Spain’s conservative Popular Party (Partido Popular or PP).

Regional politics in Galicia’s autonomous community have been the focus of Feijóo’s political career. He served as the President of the Xunta de Galicia, which is the regional government of Galicia, from 2009 to 2022. He was chosen as president for the first time in 2009 and afterward re-elected. He currently serves as a member of the Senate and as president of the People’s Party.

Feijóo, a former civil servant, served as secretary general for the agriculture and health ministries in Galicia before transitioning to the same position at the national Ministry of Health. He presided over the State Society of Mail and Telegraphs for three years.

Feijóo has been praised for successfully heading the Galician regional administration and has been recognized for his centrist approach throughout his time in office. He has reportedly pushed for increased economic activity, the development of new jobs, and the preservation of close relations with the national government of Spain.

In terms of his private life, Feijóo dated the journalist Carmen Gámir from 2000 to 2012. He has been in a relationship with Eva Cárdenas, the director of Zara Home, since 2013, and in February 2017, they welcomed their only child, also named Alberto.
