Amber
Heard’s former personal assistant claims she never witnessed the actress being
physically abused by her then-husband, Johnny Depp, but claims Heard once spit
in her face when she requested a raise.
On
Thursday, during the trial for Depp’s libel suit against Heard, Kate James said
in a video deposition aired in court that Heard plunged into screaming fits of
blind wrath, sent nonsensical text messages at 4 a.m., and was frequently
intoxicated and high on illegal drugs.
Depp,
on the other hand, was very calm, almost shy, “like a total Southern
gentleman,” James said.

The
“Pirates of the Caribbean” actor accused Heard of indirectly defaming
him in an article that she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018. In the
article, Heard describes herself as a ‘public figure representing domestic
abuse’. Depp’s name isn’t mentioned in the article, however, his lawyers
contend that it clearly refers to a restraining order that Heard requested in
May 2016, shortly after Depp informed her that he wanted a divorce.
Heard’s
lawyers claims that Depp’s denial of abusing Heard is untrustworthy, since he
drank frequently and used drugs to the point of blacking out and forgetting what
he did. However, James’ video testimony painted an opposing picture: Depp was
the calm one, while Heard was said to be routinely inebriated and verbally
nasty, especially to her mother and sister.
“Her
poor sister was treated like a dog that you kicked, basically,” James said.

From
2012 until 2015, James worked for Heard and says she was paid “very
little.” She claimed she was employed for a $25-an-hour starting wage and
that her responsibilities included anything from picking up Heard’s dry
cleaning to conversing with the actor’s Hollywood representatives.
James
was also tasked with collecting two copies of any magazine featuring Heard and
hiding them in the garage to keep Depp from seeing them, according to James.
When James failed to put the magazines in the garage, Heard flew into a ‘blind
rage’, according to James.
Regarding
Heard and Depp’s time together, James said Heard was a “very dramatic person”
who was deeply insecure in the relationship. Heard often called James to cry
and complain about Depp, she said.
“I
remember one time she called me when she was alone in New York City, and she
was crying and walking around the streets,” James said. She said she told
Heard to go inside: “I was worried that the paparazzi might take a photo
of her.”

Depp’s
deposition also focussed a text message he sent to James after he and Heard
broke up. “Come over for a spot of purple and we’ll fix her flabby ass
nice and good,” Depp texted.
A
lawyer inquired as to whether “spot of purple” meant wine and
“her” meant Heard. James stated that she does not wish to guess.
“This is the way he writes,” James stated of Depp’s writing
style. “It’s very random and you don’t sort of question it…. He writes in a
very abstract way.”
Both
Depp and Heard, as well as actors Paul Bettany and James Franco and tech
billionaire Elon Musk, are set to testify at the six-week trial in Fairfax
County Circuit Court.
