According to Philadelphia Police Inspector D F Pace, “There were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every weekend, when the shooting broke out.”
The incident took place around midnight, mere minutes after another shooting took place at 11pm local time near the area.

A police officer who was responding to the mass shooting said he saw several gunmen firing into the horrified crowd. The officer, who was “within 10 to 15 yards of the shooter” according to Pace, also managed to get a shot off at the gunmen.
While it is currently unclear whether the officer’s shot struck one of the suspects, NBC reported that the suspects, whose exact number is unclear, dropped their guns and fled the scene of the crime.

Once the chaos had been brought under control and the area secured, police discovered two guns at the site of mass shooting, with one of them having an extended magazine.
At the time of writing this, no suspect had been arrested, and a manhunt is on to find the perpetrators behind yet another mass shooting in the US. Officers are also looking for a connection between the earlier, nearby shooting, and the mass shooting on South Street.
