Day 12 of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Wednesday, February 16, saw both the Canada and the United States exited the men’s hockey tournament in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Americans blew a late lead and lost 3-2 in penalties to Slovakia, while Canada exited hours later with a 2-0 loss to Sweden.
This is the first time since 2006 that both the US and Canada are out of the semis. Russia and Finland have also made the semis.
The US women’s curling team was also knocked out, losing 10-7 to Japan in the final group game. The men’s team have another chance at making it, if they can beat Denmark in their final game on Thursday.
South Korea’s Cho Minjeong successfully defended her Olympic title in the 1,500-meter short track speedskating event. She won in 2 minutes, 17.789 seconds, extending the tradition of an Asian woman winning the event.
There were a total of six medal events – Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey and Short Track Speed Skating.
