Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the removal of Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General of India, over his alleged meeting with BJP leader and West Bengal Opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari.
The letter says that the meeting that happened in Delhi between Suvendu Adhikari and Tushar Mehta ‘reeks of impropriety’ as the former is accused in the Narada and Saradha cases, the investigations of which are underway. According to the TMC party, the BJP leader is accused of cheating, bribery, and illegal gratification cases related to Narada and Saradha.
The letter has been written by TMC MPs Derek O’Brien, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Mahua Moitra.
Tushar Mehta is appearing in the Supreme Court and high court representing the CBI in the Narada case and is also advising the investigation agency in the Saradha chit fund scam, the letter says.
The meeting between Adhikari and the solicitor general “not only reeks of impropriety, there is a direct conflict of interest and also taints the position of the second highest law officer of the country, the Solicitor General”, the TMC leaders added.
The letter says the Adhikari-Mehta meeting took place “curiously” subsequent to the BJP leader’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
To maintain the “neutrality and integrity” of the office of the Solicitor General of India, necessary steps be taken for the removal of Mehta from the post, the TMC MPs said in the letter to the prime minister.
