BJP MP Tirath Singh Rawat will be the chief minister of Uttarakhand, reported ANI quoting Trivendra Singh Rawat, who stepped down as the CM on Tuesday. 56-year-old Tirath Singh is a BJP MP and was the state party chief from 2013-15. He was an MLA from the state in the past. He will be sworn in at 4pm on Wednesday.

He told ANI, “I thank PM, HM and party chief who trusted me, a mere party worker who comes from a small village. I’d never imagined that I’d reach here. We’ll make all efforts to meet people’s expectations and take forward work done in last four years.”

Trivendra tendered his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya at the Raj Bhawan in Dehradun. He was going to complete four years in office on March 17. He met the BJP high command on Monday night in New Delhi before submitting his resignation.

Soon after submitting his resignation, Rawat addressed a press conference at his official residence, telling the media that the party has “collectively decided” that someone else should lead the state now.

The BJP leadership had sent two observers, including party vice-president Raman Singh and general secretary Dushayant Kumar Gautam, to Uttarakhand to get feedback from the party’s core group in the state amid reports of discontent against the chief minister.

In 2017, the BJP won the elections by winning 57 seats in the 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly.
