At least nine people were killed and three were injured in a massive landslide that hit a bridge on Sangla-Chitkul road in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. The weather reports recently issued a landslide warning in Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rainfall in the region.

All the victims were tourists reportedly travelling from Chitkul to Sangla in a tempo when boulders landed on their vehicle. There were 10 tourists and one driver, among whom eight died on the spot and four tourists rushed to hospital for treatment. Another commuter died on the spot.

A team of doctors arrived at the accident site and rushed all the victims to a nearby hospital. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

“The landslide accident cause in Kinnaur of Himachal Pradesh is extremely saddening. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. All arrangements to treat those injured in the accident. I wish them a speedy recovery,” PM Modi tweeted in Hindi. 

He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of those who lost their life.

“An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in an accident in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured: PM @narendramodi,” tweeted PM Modi.
