Bitcoin, the world’s largest and most well-known cryptocurrency, plummeted more than 4% on Tuesday, extending a week-long slide that included an upgrade to its blockchain.

According to cryptocurrency analysts, there does not appear to be any news driving the falls, and the swings appear to be driven by profit-taking following the strong run-up.

“There is a lack of news and this is some pure selling of spot and some additions of short selling. Outside of this, there is no significant news,” said Matthew Dibb, chief operating officer at Singapore-based crypto asset manager Stack Funds.

Since June, the value of bitcoin has more than doubled, owing to the widespread use of cryptocurrencies and, more recently, the debut of futures-based bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the United States.

On Sunday, it underwent a big update known as Taproot, which allows its blockchain to conduct more complicated transactions, possibly broadening the virtual currency’s use cases and making it more competitive with ethereum for processing smart contracts.
