Mick Schumacher, who was involved in a high-speed crash at qualifying in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, said that he was hoping to race on Sunday. The 23-year-old has been ruled out of the race at Jeddah. 

The son of sevent-time world champion Michael Schumacher, Mick was airlifted to a hospital for further examination before returning to his hotel. Haas F1 later said that he will be out of the race Sunday and the American team said it would field just one car.

Haas team principal Gunther Steiner said that “it doesn’t make sense” to build up a new car and start from the pitlane, especially when the parts are in short supply ahead of the Australian GP. The drivers will race in Melbourne on April 1. 

Speaking from the paddock on Sunday afternoon, Schumacher echoed Steiner’s thoughts. However, the German driver did add that he is ready to race. 

“Yeah, I’m for sure ready, or I would be ready to go racing. It’s just component management, car parts in general, we have to see and look after that we are surely able to race in Melbourne,” Schumacher told reporters ahead of the race.

He added that he was hoping for a race today. 

“I knew that it’s race two, spare parts are usually quite difficult at this time of year. So I kind of figured that might be difficult, but nonetheless, I was hoping for a race today.”

Schumacher, who turned 23 earlier this week, posted on social media that he was “OK.”

The Haas driver did not move straight away after the crash. He said that he was just  composing himself as the marshals arrived.

“I was 100%. It was mainly frustration, and me being annoyed by the fact that this happened, and obviously just reflecting on what I’d just gone through, and what I could have done better. I think that I just wanted to make sure before I started moving erratically around that everything is fine. And obviously, all the marshals and also the doctors came by and made sure that I was all fine,” he said.
