Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode the Kanpur metro as the city’s Rs. 11,000 crore metro project opened a new section today. As he rode from the IIT metro station to Geeta Nagar, the prime minister was accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

The nine-kilometer portion between IIT-Kanpur and Moti Jheel was finished in a record-breaking two years.

Here’s everything you need to know about the route map, ticket prices, and station list:

The first route of 23.8 km, from IIT to Naubasta has 22 stops, 14 of which are above ground and the remaining eight are underground.

The second route of 8.60 km, connects Agriculture University with Barra-8, with a total of eight stations, four of which are above ground and the rest below.

The stations constructed under this project are: IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur, SPM Hospital, Gurudev Square, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, LLRH, and Moti Jheel.

Aside from IIT Kanpur, the routes cover the stops for other significant educational institutions such as CSJM University and GSYM Medical College, and important bus terminuses like that of Jhakarkati Bus Station and Kanpur Central Railway Station.

The metro fares have yet to be announced, and they will be determined later. The automatic fare collection (AFC) system for QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) phones will be considered in the metro fare collecting plans.

The entire Kanpur Metro Rail Project is primarily financed by a 50:50 equity partnership between the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

In addition, on July 15, 2020, the European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a EUR 650 million loan for the project. 

The complete metro project, which includes two lines and 30 stations, will now be included in India’s metro cities.

This metro line is estimated to benefit over 40 lakh passengers.
