Gorakhpur Urban assembly constituency has Yogi Adityanath of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking on Sabhawati Shukla of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Chetna Pandey of the Indian National Congress (INC), and Chandrasekhar Azad Ravan of the Azad Samaj Party this year in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal had won the Gorakhpur Urban seat in 2017. Agarwal had beaten his closest rival Rana Rahul Singh by over 60,730 votes. Singh had contested that election on a Congress ticket.  

In 2012, the seat was won by Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal of the BJP.

Gorakhpur Urban falls under the Gorakhpur district and the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency, which is made up of five assembly seats.

Ravi Kishan of the BJP represented Gorakhpur as a member of Parliament in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Kishan defeated Rambhual Nishad from the SP with a margin of  3,01,664 votes. 

The Gorakhpur Urban assembly constituency will vote in the sixth phase of the Uttar Pradesh elections on March 3, 2022, along with 56 other constituencies in 10 districts. Uttar Pradesh will vote in seven rounds, with the last round on March 7. 

Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including neighbouring Uttarakhand.
