As per the new rules set by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the social media platforms will have to appoint compliance officers from India. The officer will overlook the complaints, monitor the content, and remove it if it is objectionable. The rules were aimed at regulating digital content featuring a code of ethics and a three-tier grievance redressal framework, which will be applicable from May 26.
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp may face a ban if they fail to comply with the rules.
