David Warner
is one of the greatest overseas players in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.
The Australian southpaw is the highest run-scorer among foreigners – 5,449 from
150 innings. His average of 41.59 is the highest among the top ten players with
most runs, with KL Rahul (46.18) the only batsman among the top 20 ahead of Warner.
He also led
the Sunrises Hyderabad to their only IPL title so far, in 2016. However, the
34-year-old hasn’t enjoyed his greatest season in the tournament in 2021 as
either batsman or skipper. He was replaced as captain halfway through the
season by Kane Williamson for leading the team to six losses out of seven.
And his
poor run of form as batsman has also seen him axed from the playing eleven, as SRH
handed Jason Roy his first cap of the season in place of Warner at the top of
the order. Apart from Warner, Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav have also faced
the brunt of SRH’s dismal season, making way for youngsters Priyam Garg and
Abhishek Sharma for the fixture against the Rajasthan Royals.
“There’s a
few young players and guys coming in to get opportunities which is really
exciting to see these guys on show,” Williamson said on the selection in his
comments after losing the toss in Dubai.

Warner is
experiencing one of his worst seasons in the IPL, scoring just 195 runs from
eight matches so far, averaging 24.37 – his lowest since 2009 – and his
lowest-ever strike rate of 107.73.
Similarly,
Pandey is also having a season to forget. While his average of 37.17 may seem
fairly decent, he has squandered a number of starts and has scored at a lowly
strike rate of 114.36.
Meanwhile SRH’s
‘X-factor’ player Kedar Jadhav has scored just 55 runs in five innings and his
returns of 12 from 12 balls and three from eight balls in the last two outings were
the final nail in the coffin.

SRH are bottom
of the table, with just one win from nine games and are out of contention for
the playoff spots. They can only look to finish on a high with a few wins under
their belt as players will look to get some precious playing time ahead of the upcoming
T20 World Cup.
