The Indian Railways celebrated the 100th birthday of
the oldest railway guard alive on Saturday, PTI reported on Monday.

Keshav Narhar Bapat, who turned 100 on November 21, was
greeted by the officials of Central Railways on achieving this feat.

“He turned 100 years old on November 21 and the Central
Railway has now decided to double his pension amount from this month as a ‘goodwill
gesture’,” CR’s chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said on Monday,
according to PTI.

Bapat had joined the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) in
1951 as a railway guard and went on to work there till 1978, the year he
retired.

The GIPR was renamed into Central Railway the same year he
joined it.

“When our personnel department officials reached Bapats
home to wish and greet him on his 100th birthday, his family members were
surprised and thanked us for the visit,” Sutar said.

Bapat is a World War 2 veteran, who served in many campaigns,
according to railway records. He took the railway job after taking a voluntary
retirement from the army.
