United States President Joe Biden projected last-minute support for California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose political fate is being decided by voters in a recall election on Tuesday. “Don’t take anything for granted”, Biden urged his followers on Twitter on the day of the election.

Biden wrote on Twitter, “California, Election Day is today. On behalf of people all across America, don’t take anything for granted.”

He added, “If you want to vote in person, make sure you know where you’re going to vote. If you’ve already voted, make sure your family and friends are voting. Vote no on the recall.”

A day before the polling, on Monday, Biden travelled to the state of California to rally for Newsom, who is a member of the Democratic party.

In Biden’s push on Monday, he warned that the political contest could shape the country’s direction on the COVID-19 pandemic, reproductive rights and the battle to slow climate change and mitigate its impacts.

The results also are likely to influence the 2022 midterm elections, when control of the United States Congress will be in play again. The party that controls the White House historically loses seats in midterms, according to reports from Associated Press.

According to reports from NPR, a new Governor could appoint fresh Senators to represent California in the country’s upper legislative chamber. This move could potentially tip the scales. Currently, Alex Padilla and Dianne Feinstein, both members of the Democratic party, occupy the two available seats.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris also made her way to the western state earlier this month in order to demonstrate support for Newsom. Harris, who is a former Senator of the state of California, previously delayed her plans for going to Newsom’s rally as the country was dealing with the Afghanistan crisis at the moment.
