The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way the world lives and Independence Day celebration is no exception. The guests at the 74th year function were greeted with PPE-wearing security personnel and a neatly-packed kit placed on all chairs containing a mask, a small bottle of hand sanitiser and a pair of gloves. Also different this time was social-distancing maintained in the placement of chairs. The usually bustling event at the historic Red Fort was scaled down this year in keeping with prescribed safety protocols to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus that is rampaging across the world even eight months after the first case.
Thermal scanners and hands-free sanitiser dispensers were kept near security gates. Social distancing norms were also enforced on the ramparts where the VVIPs were seated.
For safety reasons, children who are an important feature of the celebrations, were missing this year. “Today, our children are not here with us. The coronavirus pandemic has halted all of us,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
Colourful carpets in enclosure and aisles contrast seating and walking areas, and posters bearing social distancing norms messages like ‘keep six ft distance’, ‘wear a mask’, dot the venue, reports PTI.
Delhi has been one of the worst-affected cities in the country as far as the spread of the virus is concerned. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the national capital has crossed 1.5 lakh, while 4,178 people have died due to the viral infection.
Also in place were multi-layered security arrangements and measures. A security ring, including NSG snipers, elite SWAT commandos and kite catchers were in place. Over 300 cameras were installed for security. There will be around 4,000 security personnel at the Red Fort.
