Bollywood has produced some incredible work and cinematic masterpieces, from Mother India to White Tiger, and several of its films got nominated for the Oscars. Since the year 1957, India has been sending films for the Academy Awards.

As the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony is around the corner, let’s take a look at top Hindi movies that made it to the Oscars nomination list.
Mother India
Directed by Mehboob Khan and featuring Nargis, Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar, ‘Mother India’ was the first Hindi film to be nominated for Oscars in 1957. The movie made history and gave birth to a mother figure character in Bollywood. It, however, could not win the prestigious award.
Salaam Bombay
Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay, featuring Safiq Sayed, Nana Patekar, Raghubir Yadav and Anita Kanwar was the second movie that made it to the Oscars list. The movie was about poverty and shows the contrast between the poverty and glamour of Bollywood that Bombay is known for. It also won National Award in the year 1988
Lagaan
Actor Amir Khan’s ‘Lagaan’ was also nominated for the Oscars. Lagaan was the best of both world-cricket and Bollywood. The film made it to the list of Oscar nominations in 2002, but could not win the award.
Little Terrorist
Little Terrorist, written and directed by Ritu Kumar, was nominated under the category of Best Live Action short film at the Academy Award. The movie was about a Muslim Pakistani Boy who mistakenly crosses the Indian border and befriends a Hindu Brahmin.

The White Tiger
The White Tiger is the latest Bollywood film that made it to the Oscars’ nomination list. Directed by Ramin Bahrani, featuring Priyanka Chopra, Rajkumar Rao and Adarsh Gaurav is a story about poverty. The movie shows casteism and a journey of a driver who tries to escape poverty to become an entrepreneur. The movie was nominated under the Best Adaptated Screenplay category.
