Beto O’Rourke, the top Democratic contender for upcoming gubernatorial elections in Texas, slammed United States President Joe Biden for his lack of urgency on developing the country’s immigration policy.

The move highlighted O’Rourke’s potential intent to distance himself from the country’s top executive office in his campaign, which will challenge incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, a member of the Republican party.

He said in a statement on CNN’s ‘State of the Union, “I do not think we have seen enough urgency when it comes to rewriting our immigration laws to match the needs and the reality that we see, especially in our border communities”, according to reports from Reuters.

The 49-year-old American politician added, “So, yes, we expect more of our president and those who represent us in Congress.”

O’Rourke announced his bid for the top Texas office late last week in a two-minute video posted on his social media handle. He said, “It is not going to be easy. But it is possible.”

When asked about Joe Biden’s participation in the upcoming campaigns, O’Rourke said, “This campaign in Texas is not going to be about Joe Biden. It’s not going to be about Donald Trump. It is not going to be about anyone from outside of our state.”

According to US media reports, the Democratic candidate’s campaign has been on the right track. He raised funds worth $2 million within 24 hours of kickoff.

Without giving away too many details, O’Rourke’s campaign officials said that the funds came from over 20,000 donations– a large number of which were Texas residents– that were collected in the first 24 hours, according to reports from Associated Press.

The Democratic party has suffered major electoral blows recently in the United States elections, mainly in New Jersey and Virginia. Both legislative bodies — Senate and House of Representatives — are currently thinly controlled by the Democrats.
