A woman in the United States received a hefty charge of $40 after she wept during a medical appointment.

The woman’s sibling, Camille Johnson, uploaded an image of the medical bill on Twitter, encircling a description that reads “brief emotional/behavioural assessment” with a $40 amount mentioned next to it. 

Johnson, who is a popular YouTuber, elucidated on Twitter that her sister suffers from a “rare disease” and “got emotional because she feels frustrated and helpless” as she faced challenges in finding suitable medical care.

The medical bill displays that Johnson’s sister made her doctor’s visit in January. The bill comprised details of a visual acuity test for $20, a hemoglobin test for $15, a health risk assessment test and capillary blood draw for $30, and a preventative health screening for $350.

While most of the bill made sense, the $40 charge for “crying” came as a shock to Johnson. 

“One tear in and they charged her $40 without addressing why she is crying, trying to help, doing any evaluation, any prescription, nothing,” the 25-year-old wrote in the tweet.

Since its upload, the image has garnered over 490,000 likes and more than 15,500 comments. 

Reacting to the incident, several users shared their bizarre medical experiences.

“When I got surgery this past June to remove a tumour, I asked them what ‘Women’s services’ was for. It was for the pregnancy test they administered,” one user said while revealing that the hospital charged“$1,902 to pee and for them to dip a stick into it. Thankfully most was covered by insurance but geez”.

“Tell me you live in America without telling me that you live in America,” another user quipped.

Johnson told the Independent that her sister did not receive any mental illness evaluation but was simply charged $40 after an anonymous medical worker saw her crying.  

With the viral tweet, Johnson aims to shed light on the shortcomings of the US healthcare system.
