French President Emmanuel Macron has walked right into his second term after defeating far-right leader Marine Le Pen and winning the election on Sunday.

In merely five years of his presidency, Macron went from a newbie to a significant world leader in the European Union, who lately, has been deeply involved in ways to put an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As the 44-year-old won his second term and became the first French president to do so in a generation, several global leaders sent congratulatory wishes. 

United States

“Congratulations to @EmmanuelMacron on his re-election. France is our oldest ally and a key partner in addressing global challenges. I look forward to our continued close cooperation — including on supporting Ukraine, defending democracy, and countering climate change,” US President Joe Biden wrote on Twitter.

Canada

“Congratulations, @EmmanuelMacron. Looking forward to continuing our work together on the issues that matter most to people in Canada and France – from defending democracy, to fighting climate change, to creating good jobs and economic growth for the middle class,” wrote Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. 

United Kingdom

“Congratulations to @EmmanuelMacron on your re-election as President of France. France is one of our closest and most important allies. I look forward to continuing to work together on the issues which matter most to our two countries and to the world,” tweeted Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Germany

“@EmmanuelMacron . Your constituents also sent a strong commitment to Europe today. I am pleased that we will continue our good cooperation!” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Twitter. 

Spain

“The citizens have chosen a France committed to a free, strong and fair EU. Democracy wins. Europe wins. Congratulations Emmanuel Macron,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Belgium

“The French have made an important choice today. They chose certainty and the values of the Enlightenment.

I heartily congratulate @EmmanuelMacron on his re-election. Let’s work together for a strong and united Europe,” Prime Minister Alexander De Croo wrote on Twitter.

European Union

“Dear @EmmanuelMacron , congratulations on your re-election as President of the Republic.

I look forward to continuing our excellent cooperation.

Together, we will move France and Europe forward,” tweeted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

On the other hand, European Council President Charles Michel said that the EU “can count on France for five more years.”
