Anne Frank’s ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’ is a seminal masterpiece. It not only familiarises teenagers with the Holocaust but also helps them build their own character. Anne’s views about her family, the adults around her, boys, her own sexuality, her future ambitions, and the horrors of events in the world outside inspire teenagers to reflect on similar themes in their own life.

Although nothing can substitute for reading the diary of the young girl, these four movies come close to emulating that experience.

Each of these films, two films, and two docudramas, will add to and reinforce the lessons learned from Anne Frank’s diary.

The Diary of Anne Frank

‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ is a 1959 film based on the same-named Pulitzer Prize-winning 1955 play, which was modeled on Anne Frank’s posthumously published diary, a Jewish girl who spent World War II hidden with her family.

It is the first film adaptation of both the play and the original book, and it stars three members of the original Broadway cast. It was directed by George Stevens, with a script by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.

Anne Frank: The Whole Story

‘Anne Frank: The Whole Story’ is a two-part miniseries based on Melissa Müller’s 1998 book ‘Anne Frank: The Biography.’ On May 20 and 21, 2001, ABC broadcasted the mini-series. Ben Kingsley, Brenda Blethyn, Hannah Taylor-Gordon, and Lili Taylor featured in the series.

The series argues, controversially, but in line with Melissa Müller’s allegation, that the Frank family’s nameless betrayer was the office cleaner, although in reality the betrayer’s identity was never confirmed.

Anne Frank Remembered

This film, which won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Documentary, includes real videos of Anne Frank from her apartment balcony, a meeting between the son of Dr. Pfeffer (the dentist who shared a room with Anne) and Miep Gies, and more.

Anne Frank: The Life of a Young Girl

This is a 1998 documentary film on Anne’s life and times, with interviews with her father, Miep Gies, and a number of her friends. It is 50 minutes long.
