Larry Hogan is an American politician and businessman. He currently serves as the governor of Maryland and has been doing so since 2015. That will change soon, as the primary elections for the Maryland governor are set to take place on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. 

Hogan was exposed to politics at a young age, considering his father, Lawrence Hogan Sr. served as the governor of Maryland between 1969 and 1975. His father’s claim to fame was that he was the first Republican member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to publicly call for the resignation of President Richard Nixon following the Watergate scandal.

The 66-year-old won the Republican Maryland gubernatorial election with 43% of the vote in 2014. He beat out the Democrat nominee Anthony G. Brown by winning 51% to 47%. In 2018, when he ran for the governor’s chair again, he went up against Democrat nominee Ben Jealous, only to come out on top, winning 55% to 43%. His victory made him only the second Republican governor in the state’s history to be reelected, since Theodore McKeldin in 1954. 

The Maryland governor, who has maxed out his term limit, will only be allowed to run for office in another four years. Hogan has made clear that he will be backing his successor, Kelly Schulz, who worked as the commerce secretary under him for seven years. She is set to go up against the Trump-backed Dan Cox, who on the Jan 6, 2021 attack on Capitol Hill had tweeted that then Vice-President Mike Pence was a traitor.

Interestingly, despite being a Republican in a deep-blue state, Hogan managed to retain his governorship over both his terms. He has been called a ‘pragmatist’ by many media houses in the country for his somewhat rational approach to difficult situations as they emerge. His response to the COVID-19 pandemic was hailed by residents of Maryland as critical and well-planned compared to other Red states.
